If you use Google Ads, you’ve probably come across a new URL parameter: "gad_source." Let’s break down what this label is and what it’s used for.
“gad_source” is an additional traffic source label that complements the existing automatic gclid. It helps identify the source of an ad click and track conversions.
Previously, this parameter was called "gad," but now it has been modified to "gad_source."
This label is placed first in the URL, before GCLID and UTM, and is case-sensitive. It looks like this:
site.com/example&gad_source=1
It’s important to note that not all websites support arbitrary parameters, so it’s recommended to test how this parameter works on your site. If your site returns a 404 error or a 301 redirect, you should contact your technical team. The site must load without redirects or URL changes to avoid losing important data.
Also, keep in mind that "gad_source" is automatically added to any Google Ads account and is not a configurable parameter, unlike GCLID.
