One of the most pressing issues regarding banner advertising in Google Ads is the current banner sizes, as the requirements for them change quite often.
There are 3 types of banners in the contextual media network, each of which has its own specific sizes, these are:
Each type of banner has its own nuances in terms of preparation, display and showing in the Google Display Network (GDN). More on that later.
➊ Responsive display ad banners
These are banners that consist of several graphic and text elements, the size of which adapts to the required sizes of the sites where the advertisement is displayed. The same content can be displayed in any size.
To create an adaptive banner, you only need 2 files of different sizes and a logo.
Requirements for images:
- Landscape image (1,91:1)
Recommended size: 1200 x 628
Min. size: 600 x 314 - Square image (1:1)
Recommended size: 1200 x 1200
Min. size: 300 x 300 - Portrait (9:16)
Recommended size: 900 x 1600
Min. size: 600 х 1067
Requirements for logos:
- Landscape logo (4:1)
Recommended size: 1200 x 300
Min. size: 512 x 128 - Square logo (1:1)
Recommended size: 1200 x 1200
Min. size: 128 x 128
Note. The maximum graphic file size is 5120 KB.
It is not recommended to use only horizontal logos, because this can reduce the reach.
On thematic sites, adaptive banners look like this on the Internet:

* If you are placing a Google Performance Max ad or a demand generation campaign, the system will offer you to additionally use an optional vertical banner (4:5) of the following sizes:
Recommended size - 960 x 1200
Minimum size - 480 x 600
➋ Display ads banners
These are images with fixed dimensions that are displayed on platforms with the same permitted dimensions. Below is an example of such a banner with dimensions that meet the requirements of the advertising platform.

* HD - also, you can use images twice the size for devices with high screen pixel density.
Animated Ads (GIF format) Animation duration and speed:
- Animation duration no more than 30 seconds;
- Animation cycle no more than 30 seconds;
- Playback speed no more than 5 frames per second.
* Google Ads no longer supports HD animated GIFs.
➌ HTML5 Banners
These are non-standard banners with custom layout, which allow you to add completely different display scenarios. Driving out cars, carousel of goods, display of discounts, and so on.
As a rule, these banners are made in special design programs, after which they are loaded into Google Ads for display in GDN.

What sizes to make and what not to make?
If you need coverage - do everything or adapt.
If you need specific impression positions - fixed sizes that you choose yourself.
Well, and the most important note. If you noticed, the archive size of any banner should not exceed 150 KB. So, the designer will have to approach the issue of banners quite meticulously, since it is necessary to comply with both the quality and the requirements for the Google Ads CMS. Moderation takes from 48 hours. It depends on luck. There are cases when moderation takes up to 7 days. Therefore, if you are planning a media campaign, do it in advance.
